It is easy to neglect and put off fire equipment inspection, as we tend to not think about it until we need it. If the time comes that fire equipment is needed, it must be in working order, and putting off that inspection could put property and people at risk. With the dry summer season upon us, it is definitely time to take some steps to ensure your fire equipment is in order.
Inspect Fire Extinguishers
First, you will want to inspect all of your portable fire extinguishers. Fire extinguishers do have an expiration date, and must be replaced before this date arrives to ensure proper functioning. Portable fire extinguishers are very important, as they can be the difference between a small fire quickly being put out, and the loss of an entire building.
Test Alarm and Emergency Lighting
If it has been awhile since the fire alarm and emergency lighting system has been tested, now is a great time to make sure these are in excellent working order. Without a working alarm and lighting system, there may be a delay for people in a building to know of a fire, which could result in tragedy.
Verify Sprinkler Systems Are Functional
If your building has a sprinkler system, the dry season is also a good time to make sure that any maintenance and inspection that is required is carried out. Not only will this keep your building and its inhabitants more safe, but it will also make sure that you are meeting fire code expectations.
Evaluate Your Fire and Safety Evacuation Plan
Finally, this is a great time to refresh yourself and your building inhabitants on your fire and safety evacuation plan. If this plan does not include a fire equipment standard maintenance plan as part of it, make sure you take this opportunity to add it, so you can be confident that your equipment will be well maintained moving forward.
